Glossary of Electronic Marketing
Terms
(in logical order)
Website
(or Web site):
A company’s, organization’s, or
individual’s presence on the World Wide Web.
URL:
Uniform Resource Locator – the global address of your website. For
example,
www.thecomingwave.com is a URL.
Domain Name:
The part of the URL identifying the
website’s address. The italicized portion of www.thecomingwave.com
is the domain name. The key is to select a domain name that is
meaningful for your business and is both easy to spell and easy to
remember.
Register/Registration:
To reserve a Domain Name, you must pay to
register the name(s) you want to use. Domain name prices are coming
down, as the most popular phrases are already taken (e.g., homes.com,
recipes.com, money.com, etc.)
Some hosting companies offer free
(or nearly free) domain name registration when you sign up for their
hosting services.
Hosting Company:
A company that physically houses your web pages and makes them available
on the World Wide Web. These firms typically charge a monthly or annual
fee for their services.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
Steps taken to promote a higher
ranking of your website on the major search engines. It isn’t enough to
create a website and wait for a constant stream of traffic. Search
Engine Optimization helps drive visitors to your site.
Email Marketing Services:
Software that manages your electronic marketing lists. This tool enables
you to efficiently maintain your user lists and send email promotions
and messages easily and inexpensively. Your customers and prospects can:
-
Sign up for the mailing list using a form on your
website
-
Confirm their request to be added to the list (i.e.,
they "opt-in")
-
Unsubscribe from your list, upon demand, at a later
date
This software also ensures that you are in compliance
with the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and
Marketing ("CAN-SPAM") Act and provides a valuable service to
your client (and potential client) base by keeping your organization
"top-of-mind."
Web Analytics:
Information about visitors to a
website—when, from where, and which pages they viewed. Analytics help to
determine what is (and isn’t) working to attract and keep website
visitors.
